What is a Cosmeceutical?

The term ‘Cosmeceutical’ is used a great deal today to describe skin care products, applied directly to the skin, particularly those recommended for their anti ageing benefits.

The word itself is derived from the words ‘cosmetic’ and ‘pharmaceutical’ and the implication in the name is that cosmeceuticals are far more effective than a normal cosmetic skin care line as they contain additional active ingredients that have a deeper and more penetrating effect on the skin.

The active ingredients used in many of these products are; antioxidants to reduce the harmful effects of free radical damage, peptides that stimulate the production of collagen in the skin and vitamins A and C.

The best advice for anyone wishing to slow down the ageing effects on the skin is to always wear a sunscreen even in the winter, to prevent damage from UV radiation and keep the skin soft and supple by using an appropriate moisturiser for their particular skin type.
